Breast cancer and soy

Usually when people hear these two words in one sentence they get some sort of a jerk reaction.

Soy has induced fear in the breast cancer community and many breast cancer practitioners.

Here's the science:

Soy is a phytoestrogen. Yes-the word estrogen is in there, but NO, soy is not a form of estrogen and does NOT contain estrogen.

The American Institute of Cancer Research finds that whole soy foods (aka tofu, edamame, miso, soy milk) are not only safe for people with a history of breast cancer but also may decrease the likelihood of recurrence and prevent the risk of developing breast cancer all-together.

Most of these studies are observational, so firm conclusions cannot be drawn....perhaps there are other confounding factors, such as the fact that women who eat soy also exercise more or eat more fruits and vegetables going on, but eating whole soy foods do not seem to pose any health risk.

Please note that while whole soy foods are recommended, soy SUPPLEMENTS or soy enriched products may not be. The concentration of isoflavones and the way the body metabolizes supplements as opposed to foods may be different and it is best to avoid at this time.
