nutrition during treatment: my top 3 factors to be aware of
🙌Many people enter treatment in autopilot. After diagnosis people put one foot in front of the other to get done what they need to to geth through. As a board certified oncology dietitian for over ten years, there are certain products I’d recommend having on hand before treatment starts:
đź’ŠSome supplements can interact with treatment. Others can be medically necessary. For example, certain forms of B12 can be critical for people with gastric cancer. Water soluble forms of fat soluble vitamins can be critical for people with pancreatic cancer. An individualized evaluation and recommendation is extremely beneficial.
🫖Ginger products and specialty teas—ginger is not only healthy but has a chemical component similar to many anti nausea medications and can help settle your stomach down when need it. Other teas like “smoothe move” and fennel tea can with other digestive ailments like constipation and heartburn.
💪During treatment, protein needs go up and drinking adequate fluids is important. Protein can help with things like aiding tissue repair, blood cell recovery etc. Consuming adequate fluids like broth, ice pops, jello, tea and water can help detoxify and protect the kidneys. In general, if you divide your weight in lbs in half, that is how many oz’s of fluid you need in a day (150lb person needs about 75 oz of fluid/day).
